The Portugal Golden Visa Program is a 5-year residency by investment initiative for non-EU/Swiss citizens.
Advantages
The Golden Visa program is the most affordable option as you can gain citizenship as a resident in just 5 years, while still remaining flexible in how much time you need to spend in Portugal each year.
You do not have to be a tax resident in Portugal.
Requirement to live in the country: The mandatory minimum stay in Portugal is 7 (seven) days for the first year and 14 (fourteen) days for each subsequent 2-year period. Possibility to live, work or study in Portugal: You can benefit from these rights while remaining a citizen of your home country.
Family reunification: Residence permit is extended to your family members as well.
Visa-free travel in the European Schengen Area: free movement in 25 EU countries + 4 EFTA countries.
To be eligible for the Portugal Golden Visa program, a minimum investment of EUR 500,000 is legally required in an authorized investment fund. The funds for the investment must come from outside Portugal. Real estate investments were previously eligible for the Golden Visa, but as of October 7, 2023, this option is no longer available.
Capital Gains: Individual investors who are not resident in Portugal are not subject to tax. This exemption also covers capital gains, provided that the fund invested is not a real estate fund.
Open-Ended Funding Flexibility: After the 5-year period is complete, you have the option to continue with your Golden Visa status, in which case you will need to protect the investment. Alternatively, you can convert to permanent residency status or citizenship, in which case you can either protect the investment or convert it to cash.

The Portugal Golden Visa by Donation is an option that allows individuals and families to obtain a residence permit in Portugal by making a donation to approved programs. This is one of the investment options offered under the Portugal Golden Visa program and is open to non-EU, European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss citizens. The program offers the possibility of obtaining Portuguese citizenship after five years. With the Golden Visa by Donation application, applicants make donations to support cultural, scientific or artistic initiatives in Portugal. Donations are usually made to public or private organizations that support Portugal’s cultural heritage, research or scientific advancement. The minimum donation required is usually €250,000. However, this amount may vary depending on the program or project.
